Witnessing a murder they flee from a stranger, who chases them across the plains until they hide. Attempting to get back to town, they are ambushed by the man, who is recognized to be Mary's father. He reveals that he killed the miner for a nugget, desperate to leave the diggings, and is found to be broken and consumed by greed. When Tom insists on telling the authorities, he is held at gunpoint, but Mary steps in starting a fight, during which she throws the nugget into the river. Despite their protests, her father chooses to drown trying to find it, rather than face the dishonor of hanging.
